Effective Visual Communication of Science

# Communication

Course Description

This course introduces a comprehensive design method and process, as well as a set of strategies, that have been specifically developed to help scientists visually communicate complex ideas in a way that is easily understood by both scientific and non-scientific audiences.

Through structured, practical and engaging training, participants will learn to create effective scientific images, slides, posters, grant applications and graphical abstracts. The course emphasises immediate application through working on participants' own research projects, providing opportunities for peer discussion and actionable feedback to strengthen the clarity and impact of their visual communication.

Self-study module – Fundamentals, Scientific Visuals, and Homework (5 hours, self-paced)

  • Fundamentals of Visual Communication: Discover how the principles of human visual perception and psychology influence the interpretation of visual information. Discover a science-based design method to visualize your research and make it easily comprehensible. The course covers the strategic use of layout, eye flow, colours and typography in all types of scientific images.
  • Scientific Visuals: You will learn how to apply the presented method to slides, posters, and grant proposals. This holistic approach is based on the fundamental principles; it is easy to understand and is also easy to remember and apply.
  • Homework: Apply the concepts to your own research by preparing images or slides for the on-site workshop. Submitted materials will be given personalised feedback and will form the basis of discussion during the live session.

On-site Workshop (7-8 hours)

  • Recap and Q&A: an effective review of self-study topics, followed by optional one-to-one consulting with the facilitator to address your individual challenges.
  • Feedback on your submitted materials: You will receive practical suggestions on how to improve your scientific images and slides. You are also encouraged to discuss your posters, grants and other means of visual science communication.
  • Graphical abstract exercise: You will draw a sketch of your research
  • Peer discussion and feedback: You will both give and receive informed feedback.

Course Goals

Learn a structured approach to visually communicating complex scientific ideas for scientific and non-scientific audiences.
