From 1 January 2019, the Cluster of Excellence »Mathematics Münster. Dynamics - Geometry - Structure«. First and foremost, questions are to be solved in the research fields of number and group theory, of spaces and operators as well as mathematical modelling and approximation. This mathematical research is of particular relevance for applications in the life sciences, physics, chemistry and technology.
»As a catalyst for the transfer of knowledge from mathematics to industry, we have been working with Fraunhofer Institutes for a long time«, says Prof. Dr. Mario Ohlberger, one of the two spokespersons of the Cluster of Excellence. The cooperation with the Fraunhofer ITWM is particularly intensive. Five joint projects between the DFG and the BMBF have been funded here in recent years. With the High Performance Center Simulation and Software Based Innovation, the cooperation is to be continued and novel analytical and numerical multiscale approaches and the associated methods for model reduction brought to industrial maturity.
Transfer from theory to application
One goal is to establish the model reduction library pyMOR as the leading software for industrial applications. Furthermore, innovative methods for the optimization of coupled partial differential equations (PDEs) and multi-stage stochastic approximations will be investigated. Pilot applications are e.g. the improvement of fuel cells and batteries with regard to degradation processes as well as the efficient control of reaction kinetics in porous media such as groundwater layers or catalysts.
